I just wanted to share my experience.
I tried the Towel trick, and as for a few other fellows my Xbox worked for like a half an hour, and the just displayed 256 colors.
When i restarted the Xbox it had the same problem as before. No picture.
So I decide to take the whole thing a part. I followed various disassembles guide on Youtube to get it apart. The a used my experience from building computers
to disassemble the cooling parts and removed the old thermal paste and ad new one. No the system has ran 4 hours without problem. And i hope it will stay that way!

"alright dudes here we go. If you look up further on this thread i HAD the same problem. This is how i fixed it. I needed it to red ring so i could send it back in to get replaced since my 1 year warrenty was up. But i fixed it instead. So here is how you do it. First i took off my hard drive on the 360. Then i pluged it to the tv not with HDTV (use the red, yellow and white make sure it is on tv not HDTV) i only say this because i didn't use the HDTV setting to fix it. then i pluged it into the wall with the 360 laying down not up and down and turned it on. (no picture but sound) with the 360 on i took 1 towel folded it long ways and wraped it around my 360 from back to front (make sure you cover the fans in the back to make it over heat.) leave your 360 on until it red rings (you can hear the 360 quit down. it takes about 15-30 mins depending on how fast it over heats. once this happens unwrap the 360 and turn it off wait 5 secs and power it back on and there you go you should have picture and sound again. mine has been working for 3 days now with no problem i even have it hooked up using the HDTV cables in my living room. if this don'ts help you now you have a red ringed 360 and you can send it in to get repaired since there is a 3 year warrenty for red ringed 360's."
