Xbox 360 | Graphics FAQThis is a featured page

What resolutions are supported by the Xbox 360?
The Xbox 360 supports all standard international variations of composite video (PAL, NTSC), all component VGA resolutions (from VGA 640x480 at 50 Hz and 60 Hz, passing through 1024x768 at 50 and 60 Hz, to 1920x1080 at both 50 and 60 Hz) and video resolutions (480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i).

Does the Xbox 360 only work on a high definition capable television?
No, the Xbox 360 supports different connections to different television types. It works fine on a traditional analog television with 4:3 aspect ratio.

Do all Xbox 360 games support high definition?
Yes, all original Xbox 360 games must support at least 720p.

Will the graphics appear very bad on standard televisions?
No, since overall the graphics in Xbox 360 games have greater detail in terms of texture, sizes, and polygon counts. The games look definitely better even on standard televisions compared to earlier generation consoles.

If I have HDTV, will the games automatically be in high definition?
No, in order to play Xbox 360 games in high definition, you will need either the component or VGA cable. If you use the standard composite video or the S-Video cables, the games will be in standard definition only.

My HD only supports 480p and 1080i, but I've heard that most games are programmed for 720p. Will the Xbox 360 reduce game visuals to 480p?
The Xbox 360 has a built-in scaler that will scale the output to any resolution you need. If a game is designed with 720p in mind, but your TV only supports 480p or 1080i, Xbox 360 will run the game in the best resolution your TV offers. In this case that would be 1080i. The scaler also works similarly with computer screens.

Does the Xbox 360 support SCART and PAL resolutions?
Yes, the Xbox 360 supports SCART and PAL resolutions.
