The Outfit - Review
The Outfit is a shooter, kind of like Star Wars: Battlefront I and II, but in a World War II setting. While there are certain things about the game that could definitely be disappointing, but there are some good points as well.
Graphics: 6/10
Ok, I'm probably being a bit harsh with the graphics only giving them a 6. Think of it this way though. If this were an Xbox game, I'd be squealing with glee that developers were figuring out ways to squeezing this much graphical goodness out of my Xbox. Mind you, I think that Ninja Gaiden looks just about as good, but the fact that there can be so much happening at once in this game is cool. You don't just control yourself. Well, you do, but I'll explain further later. The point is that you can always have a squad of four other guys with you. The fire and smoke effects in the game are good, but not Call of Duty 2 good. All of the vehicles in the game look pretty good, too, but still, not spectacular. There is no choice for a first person view, only third person, which really isn't an issue, it's just the way the developers chose to make the game, and who knows? It could work better this way.
Sound: 7/10
The sound is decent. Some of the music is quite good, and the explosions and weapons sound good, as well. However, nothing really stands out as "Oh my God, that was freaking amazing!" quality, like it does in other games, like Oblivion, where you can tell where stuff is simply by listening to it. In fact, the sound in my copy has cut out a few times, only to come right back. Now, I've had this happen in other games, but not to this degree. It can be quite maddening.
Gameplay: 8/10
It's a mixed bag here. The controls are easy to learn and pretty responsive. However, the vehicle driving is a bit difficult, and can be kind of slow, at least slower than they seem as though they should be. The single player game is kind of boring, but multiplayer is where it's at. There are several game modes, and all the objects are destructable, which can be really cool. A building in front of one of your opponents? Blow that building away, then blow that sucker up, as he crouches behind the smoking rubble. The best part in my opinion, is that you can have drops to help you out. These include several vehicles, Anti-tank or air guns, and even troops. Yeah, that's right, you can have extra help parachute in to help you. This part kicks butt. You can get guys to parachute in, then load them up in the tank or truck you just parachuted in too, and you can all go kick butt together.
Replay: 7/10
If you're going to play this game at all, play it online. There is a ton of replay value there, and that is the reason that I'm giving it a 7. If I had to base it on single player alone, for those of you without Xbox Live, I'd have to give it a 4, simply because you CAN go back and blow more stuff up if you want to, and who doesn't like that?
Overall: 7/10 (with online) 3/10 (without online) [Not Averages]
Like I said previously, if you're going to play this game, play it online, or with buddies. Playing the single player campaign is just boring. You're placed in a mission and told what to do, then what to do next, then what to do after that, and so on, and so on. It's tedium at it's finest. However, if you play online, or with local buddies, it's a completely different story. It's fun to take your own squad and try to fight off your opponents' soldiers, especially by drive by, or even better, drive through. Don't get it for the single player, only for multiplayer. And, if you can, buy it used, like I did, you won't feel quite so bad about its lack of polish. I'd say give it a rent, then buy if you like it, because it's definitely not for everyone.
