Oblivion: Mehrunes' Razor Mod

Oblivion seems to be making a habit of causing a stir in the gaming community. First it was the breathless anticipation with which we awaited the release of the game, then it was the rapture with which we played it. Now, as new content in released in the form of cheapie “plug-ins,” gamers argue about whether or not this new pricing structure (microtransactions) are going to kill the industry or save it. Allow me to put the big picture aside for just a minute while we Oblivion players ponder the more pressing question of, “Is my money better spent on the Mehrunes’ Razor mod or chicken fries from Burger King?” Your cholesterol level will be thrilled to hear that this enormous dungeon, complete with a unique magical weapon at the end, is well worth the cash.

The quest begins when you receive a journal update telling you that a Telvanni arch-mage by the name of Frathen Drothan is up to something…just what that is remains to be seen, but odds are good he isn’t working on a new oatmeal cookie recipe for the Emperor’s birthday party. Once your map is dutifully marked with the location of Drothan’s hideout, you can head off to the far eastern reaches of Cyrodiil to check up on him. When you arrive, you’ll find the single biggest dungeon in the entire game. Big. Really big. I mean, big like a Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade float big. So big that Anvil, Bravil and probably Cheydinhal too could all comfortably fit inside and leave room for a nice cozy breakfast nook. Big.

There are enemies aplenty in the form of Drothan’s recruits, and an interesting story that unwinds through diary entries and journals. Your destination (and the whole reason Drothan is in this particular neck of the woods to begin with) lies deep within an Ayleid ruin; a chamber containing Mehrunes’ Razor, an enchanted dagger capable of one-hit kills. I know, a dagger doesn’t sound terribly exciting, but unlike the daedric and glass ones you find in other dungeons, this one actually looks pretty wicked and has a fairly decent reach.

No matter what level you are, the enemies will provide a healthy challenge and give up some pretty phat lewt, too. Seventeen new magical items have been added to this dungeon, and there’s plenty of armor to pillage from the bodies of your fallen enemies, you’d just better have a high strength stat or a robust Feather spell at the ready, because it’s a looooong way back to town to sell off the swag.

Taking your time, killing off everything that breathes, it should take you a couple of hours to clean out the entire dungeon, and you’ll be stinking rich when you sell off all the booty. Add to that an intriguing little story, a mysterious Morag Tong assassin and a unique enchanted weapon, too? If that’s not worth three bucks to you, you’ve got the wrong hobby.
