NHL 2K7 Review (Jmann2k1)

NHL 2K7Description: OK OK... I know what you're thinking. Didn't this guy just give EA's NHL 07 a glowing review? Well, that's true. I did. And I stand by it. Having said that, though, you should know that I EA's game, and bought NHL 2K7, instead, and haven't looked back. It is because of this fact that in this review, I will include my text for the NHL 07 review as well. It will be italicized so as not to be confused with the 2K7 review.

Below is what I wrote for my NHL 07 introduction/description:

Description: Everyone knows that EA has had some trouble for, oh, let's just say the past eleven years or so, when trying to duplicate the magic that was NHL 94-95. Finally, the not so little company that could, has, once again come through and created what can best be described as a hockey experience.

OK, Since this game is so different than any hockey game that has come before it, I think it deserves a different type of review. It's hard to describe how it's more of an experience when breaking it down into different categories. So, instead, for this review, I will give my categorical ratings below, along with brief descriptions, and then give more detail of my experience with the game below that.

NHL 2K7Having said that about NHL 07, here is my take on NHL 2K7.
Description:

2K sports did a bang up job this year. Last year's offering from them, while not as good as previous years on last gen consoles (Xbox and PS2) in terms of gameplay, was still a fairly solid hockey experience. But, too many of the cliche tricks worked for scoring goals and scores were unrealistically high because of it. Their approach for this year's edition seems to be to improve what people complained about last year, while bringing the graphics to a next gen level, like they should be.

These are the EA scores. Not too shabby.
Graphics: 9.5/10 Absolutely stunning player models. The crowd looks good too.

Sound: 9/10 The commentary is spot on, without an overuse of color like in previous EA NHLs. The arena sounds are just plain incredible, especially in surround sound...

Gameplay: 9/10 This is an area where the game really shines.

It just FEELS like hockey. The puck doesn't stick to anyone anymore. It's its own seperate entity that slides, skids, and bounces all over the rink. You really feel as though you have complete control over your stick.

Controls: 9/10 Things are much different this year.

No longer do you use the face buttons for passing and shooting (you can, but it's the "classic" control setup). Instead, you use the right stick for shooting and checking. push forward on the stick for a wrist shot, while using the left stick to aim. Pull back and then push forward for a slapshot. Passing is now done with the R trigger. The L trigger is used to make your defensemen skate backwards and defend better. And get this... There is no speed burst button. Your players do it automatically. AND IT WORKS! For as little time as they actually spend on the ice at a time, they SHOULD skate their hearts out. You shouldn't have to push a button for it. The players will speed up when they're open, while pushing the puck out in front of them.

NHL 2K7Now for 2K7: Graphics: 8.5/10 (except for the ice. that gets a 12/10 on it's own)

Yes, yes, we all know that it's not about the graphics that a game brings to the table, it's the gameplay. Well, I'll talk about the gameplay later. The graphics in this game definitely look good. Not great, but good. Here's the thing though... The graphics for the players and crowd aren't quite as good looking as EA's game, but it all runs a lot quicker and smoother. This game runs like butter on a hot potato. The animation is absolutely wonderful. Goalies will dive for stuff, then jump and use their equipment if the puck is shot at the other end of the net. It's an amazing sight to watch. And you really notice some little details when the Cinemation camera is on. Before the second and third periods your center will skate up to center ice for the drop, and you can see beads of sweat running down his face. If you want to show an aspect of this game off to someone though, get them to look at the ice surface. Oh my God, it is the most realistic Arena ice I've seen, outside of Joe Louis Arena.

Sound: 10/10 The sound in this game is absolutely awesome.
Before and during the game, your coach and teammates will talk to you, offering encouragement, or help. The mouth movements actually match up with the speech (to a degree) now too. The Cinemation mode now has a musical score that changes depending what is happening on the ice. It's pretty cool, and you can change the music that it will play during different situations by ripping your own music to your hard drive. I can see people breaking out those "Miracle" and "Mighty Duck" Soundtrack CDs now. The crowd really gets into whatever is happening as well. They cheer louder, chant for the home team, and get upset if it's not going their way. Sometimes the camera will even pan to a few specific fans, and you can clearly make out what they're yelling, usually at the goalie for not stopping a shot.

NHL 2K7Experience:

NHL 07: The players look so good in this game, it's almost eerie. I was expecting something that looked really nice, but this just blew away my expectations. All that I really wanted was a game that looked great, but pretty much played like NHL 06 (for the original Xbox). I would have been completely happy with that.

NHL 2K7: The Players don't look as good in this game, but in my opinion, just about everything else is as good, if not better looking. Especially the ice. Never before have I seen virtual ice look this real. There's no better way to describe it. Even if you choose NHL 07 over this game, which I hope you don't, you have to rent this game just to see how the ice surface looks.

NHL 07: While a few features are missing (Create-a-Team, and single season modes), most of what you would really want is there. These are the only things that I hope they include next year along with better presentation. They should show more before and after game animations. I know that it's not really substance, but when you have this much horsepower to work with, you should show it off a bit more.

NHL 2K7: All the features are here. Everything that was in the old versions of the 2K hockey franchise of games is in this one. Want to make a player, or even a team? It's in there. Want to take that created team through a season or franchise? No problem. The only thing that I wish you could do was add a team to the league, without getting rid of one of the existing teams. I understand why they did this, and it doesn't really upset me at all... but still...

NHL2K7 and NHL 07: That being said... This was my experience last night. I came home with NHL in hand. Ripped open the plastic, and popped it in as soon as I could. Hockey is my favorite sport, and with the exception of NHL 2K1-2K5, EA's games have always been my favorite recreation of that sport. I started playing them on the PC with my dad back in the mid ninties, and have been playing them ever since.
My mom (who doesn't like video games or anything by the way) came in to see it, and was blown away. She was astonished as to how it looked, sounded, and that it did all this while I was playing it. Even my dad, who has fallen out of love with the hockey games since they became more complex than two button affairs, admited that it was astounding.
This is the first hockey game that I cannot do "the move" in to score 80% of the time. No, I'm not talking about the one timers that people always do, which used to score all the time, as well... Rather, I'm talking about moving in an S shape in front of the net and just shooting past the out of position goalie. It was a great deke for years, but completely unrealistic, and it made playing against people who would use it miserable.
The game just sucked me in. It felt like I was at Joe Louis Arena. I had the volume turned up, so the crowd was really loud, and I could almost feel the floorboards shaking. Even my video game hating sister (not counting the DS I bought her), interrupted a phone call with her boyfriend to watch for a few minutes. What I found incredible was that you could actually make out the individual stitches in players jerseys and pads. Slices form in the ice where the skates have been, and clouds of it fly up when stopping a player suddenly. I won my first two games, but lost the third, and it actually felt like I accomplished something when I won, or even when I scored. Winning is a challenge, as it should be. There shouldn't be a ton of gimme goals, as there have been in previous years. I just started a dynasty/franchise, so I may elaborate on that eventually, but not until I really get into it.

NHL 07 Overall: 9/10

This is a great game for fans of hockey, or competitive sports in general. It has the European and National leagues in addition to the NHL. Everything in the game plays great, and the animation is awesome with just a few infrequent hiccups during replays... Never during action. I've never heard a videogame announcer keep up with the action this well before. He's a bit repetititve, but not so much that he gets annoying. Winning is FINALLY rewarding. When you score, you feel as though you earned it.

NHL 2K7: 9.5/10

This is a great game of hockey, not to mention a great game in general. One timers do seem easier than in NHL 07, but not so easy that they aren't rewarding as goals. Plus, there is an option to make them more difficult, should you so choose. The move doesn't work in this game 95% of the time anymore either. Personally, I enjoy the announce team in this game much more than in NHL 07. They sound like they know what they're talking about, and the PA announcer really gets into it. The whole atmosphere is very immersive.

Can you play 2 on 2 or 4 on 4 online with 2K7? I found out too late that you can't in NHL07, which was the only reason I bought the game. Hopefully I can return/exchange it for 2K7.
