DOA4 Review - Jory

Dead Or Alive 4, or DOA4, is the same as all the others. Ridiculously hard in single player mode. Controls seem simple, until your punching them and you continually get thrown into shocking barbwire. Fun Game? Not for me. I think this title is for the avid fighter genre gamers. All this game did for me was piss me off. But I’ll try and give a fair review.

Graphics: 9 / 10
The one good thing about this game is the graphics. The environments are great and very realistic. Everything is well defined and detailed, not to mention colorful. The character models are all well done and highly detailed. When you get blown into a neon sign, the explosion is very cool, very realistic. Overall, the graphics are high and on par with the new system.

Sound: 8 / 10
The sound on this game is good in the environment and its interactions. But as for the punching and kicking? It’s the same old noise. I think they just use the same punching noises in every game. But the cars driving by on the street honking and the people on the street yelling at you is pretty decent. The music is alright too. It gets you in the mood to get your butt kicked by the computer.

Controls: 6 / 10
Well, as I think it is for all fighting games, the controls are difficult to get down. Yeah you try and look at all the moves and learn them, but it takes a long time. You can counter their attacks, but it's insanely hard because of how fast the enemy is -- and to react to that and counter it? Too tough for me. Maybe I’m just weak, but man that game makes me mad. There are two buttons to attack, punch, and kick, and also block and grab/hold. But there are like a jillion different ways you use the buttons and analogs in different ways. It's really hard to get the attack you want when the difference between a punch and a kick is a slight move of the analog.

Gameplay: 7.5 / 10
If somehow you can get past the retarded controls and the never-ending computer combos they lay out, this game could be a fun one. The environments are very interactive. You can kick people off bridges, into electrified fences, and into walls. You can also use the walls and stuff to attack the opponent in different cool moves. As a fair reviewer, the game is fun when you get everything down. But I think it’s the same as the other DOA’s.

Overall: 7.5 / 10
Overall, this game is the same as the others, just with newer graphics. But that’s a must have with the new system. Honestly I don’t find anything special about this game. Its just an entertaining, if not aggravating, fighting game with great graphics. Nothing special here.
