Compatibility FAQ

This is just a start; feel free to continue to build this out as new questions arise that have real answers.

Can I play Xbox 1 games on my Xbox 360?
Yes, you most certainly can. However, it is not possible to offer compatibility out of the box for all Xbox titles due to hardware conflicts between the two systems.

What Xbox 1 games are compatible with the Xbox 360?
In order for an Xbox 1 title to be backwards compatible with the Xbox 360, a software patch must be made by Microsoft to allow the hardware to read the game disk. Microsoft offers a list of backwards compatible titles that is constantly being updated.

How do I get the software patch to enable my games' backwards compatibility?
All you need to do to get your game running on your Xbox 360 is simply put the game into the system. It will download a patch over the Xbox Live service automatically for you. If you do not have the internet available for your Xbox 360, you can download the patch to the specific game and then install it manually onto your Xbox 360.

Is the list of compatible games ever updated?
Yes, it was last updated in March 2006. If you cannot find the game you want to play, just wait, and in time it should be added. New BC updates are released every so often and you can check the list to find out which titles have become patched.

Can I use an Xbox Controller with my Xbox 360?
No, you cannot use an Xbox controller with an Xbox 360. The Xbox 360 will only use officially licensed Xbox 360 controllers, available in wireless and USB wired.

Can I use an Xbox 360 controller on any other platform?
Yes, it is possible to use the USB Xbox 360 controller with a Windows XP based system. It will appear as a standard game controller, and work with any gamepad-supporting games.

Is the Xbox 360 compatible with my standard television?
The Xbox 360 is compatible with all standard types of TV. Both packages of Xbox 360 hardware come with audio video cables that will allow it to hook up to standard televisions.

Is the Xbox 360 compatible with my HDTV?
Yes, the Xbox 360 is compatible with most HDTV models and it supports all HDTV display modes, except for 1080p. The premium pack comes with HDTV cables, while the core pack does not. However, the HDTV cables are sold as accessories in Xbox shelf spaces everywhere.

Would it be possible to hook my Xbox 360 up to a computer monitor?
There is a device sold separately that is called a VGA adapter and it will let you hook up your Xbox 360 to a computer monitor. The kit comes with a gender changer and a plug to enable your audio jacks to be able to connect to standard PC speakers.

Is my Xbox 360 compatible with a mouse and a keyboard?
The Xbox 360 does not support PC mouse devices in any of its software. It does however support USB keyboards for titles, such as FFXI, that require text chat messaging.

Is my Xbox 360 compatible with other media devices?
Any media device which can be used on a PC as a "USB mass storage device" is compatible with the Xbox 360. This includes, but is not limited to, USB hard drives, Sony PSP, Apple Ipods, external hard drives, and USB memory sticks. It will read any compatible media formats on the device and stream it onto your system.

Will the Xbox 360 play Windows based titles?
Not at all. The Xbox 360 only plays Xbox 360 approved software on the DVD-9 format in NTSC/PAL.

Is the Xbox 360 compatible with my surge protector?
As a rule of thumb, Xbox 360 owners should realize that the 360 does in fact require the same, if not more, power then a PC. If you plan on hooking your 360 up to power through a surge protector, make sure it as an up-to-date protector and that it is not prone to defecting on occasion. An inefficient power supply is known to cause system crashes.

I have a 120volt version of the 360 bought in the US and now live in Europe. I was wondering if Microsoft offered the 220volt cord seperately from the system? It would seem logical as they sell the system here with only minor adjustments, ie. a 220volt cord and set to the region here. Just wondering.
