COD2 Review - Jory

Although I haven’t had much experience with prior Call Of Duty titles, I have had experience with other history based fps games like Battlefield and Medal of Honor. I had higher expectations for this game because of the new Xbox system. So when I finally got my hands on it, all my expectations were blown out of the water.

I’ve played other history-based fps, but this is a unique one. This is overall the greatest history-based fps I've ever played. The environments are war-torn and desolate. You think it’s just you and your comrades until you come under a rain of bullets from an mp42 stationary weapon and you dive for cover. Then your comrade yells “Grenade!” and you’re forced out of hiding and you have to meet your enemies face to face. Your team throws a smoke grenade for cover and you rush in with your sub-machine gun and lay them out. But that’s just the entrance to the city. This game is huge and it’s never the same thing twice. Incredible.

Graphics: 9.5 / 10
Amazing. You see the bullets racing past your face. You glance at your teammate and he’s firing, his helmet rocking back and his shoulder recoiling with every shot, the muzzle flash lighting his face up. You see him grin as he takes the fascist out. And I’m not just making this up. It’s like a living movie. The environments are insane: from broken walls to trenches winding around with debris and dead soldiers to shattered doors and windows. Bullets hit the ground before you and the snow blows up.

This game really lives up to the Xbox 360 name. When a grenade goes off near an object -- like, oh say, a broken desk -- splinters fly off, snow blows in your face, and you are rocked by the explosion. If you get hurt the screen blurs and your tunnel of vision narrows.

Gunfire in this game is amazing. You see the blurred muzzle flash in the distance and you realize there is an enemy behind that desk. You see the yellow streaks of bullets hitting the snow and the wall you are hiding behind. Your comrade gets hit and blood is spattered and misted in the air. You get up from hiding and look down the barrel of your gun through your sights and fire. After the flash, you see the enemy fall from the building into a heap on the ground.

Never before have I seen such realism in a war video game. Ever. I would rename this game’s genre to interactive war movie. It's especially great when you blow up the fascist building the enemy is holed up in. Wow. One thing I would point out though is that although everything is entirely realistic, some of the minor things like a pile of rubble down a dead-end stairway are poorly done. It looks really blocky and unrealistic. There are places like that all over the game. But it’s not noticeable because you’re getting shot at and you're shooting back. And it’s usually in places that you don’t go. Not a big thing. Just an observation

Sound: 10 / 10
The sound combined with the realism of the graphics is unreal. It’s so ridiculously real that you hear and see the bullets flying at you with all real sounds. Grenades are blowing up, bullets are racing by, comrades are yelling and screaming. The voice acting is pretty good for this sort of game. The face and lips react to what’s happening in the environment and to what they are saying. You hear the sound of a Panzer tank and an explosion rocks the building. Close your eyes and it’s like opening a treasure box of sound. All the things you hear in a movie, here it is. It’s so real it’s hard to explain. So many things happen at once and all the sounds come together to create such a realistic experience. Great job to the audio team on this game.

Controls: 9 / 10
The controls on this game are easy and sensible. After about five minutes you will be a pro with the controller. Not to mention the new Xbox 360 controller is easier and better than its older version. The aiming, crouching, running, jumping, and throwing grenades is all easy to handle. All the things you need to do in a war game is there. Sweet

Gameplay: 10 / 10
This game is simply amazing. And it’s not like those games where you’re the one who kills everyone and your teammates are just sort of there. Without your teammates you wouldn’t last a second. They tell you where the enemies are. Help you do what you need to do. Take out enemies sneaking behind you. Great AI. Speaking of AI, the enemy AI is really good to. They know how to take you out. They will throw a grenade to weasel you out and shoot you in the head. You could be hiding and firing and the likes for hours and not move an inch because of the intensity of the enemy fire .Lets just say they know what they are doing. The missions are never the same thing. You will never get bored. It’s impossible with this game. You could play the game over and over and beat it in many different ways. Really good job. Replay value of this game is priceless.

Overall: 9.5 / 10
Over all this game is extremely realistic and entertaining. An extremely good buy and well worth buying an Xbox just for this game. Simply amazing
